The Paraná Necropolis
In September 1917, José Coelho made one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of his career: the Paraná Necropolis. Located near the village of Molelos, in the municipality of Tondela, it became one of the most enigmatic cemeteries from the late Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. This cemetery consisted of a set of six boxes (cists) made of schist stones, inside which the ashes and urns resulting from the cremation of bodies were deposited. These boxes were inserted into a circular enclosure, composed of slabs placed on top.
The archaeological work was carried out with such rigor that, 80 years later, the samples he collected could be analyzed in modern laboratories, allowing, for example, to know that the temperatures reached in the combustion varied between 400°C and 700°C, and that the cemetery was built between 1150 and 1000 BC. C. and that the plant species used as fuel were alder, hazelnut, strawberry tree, white heather, heather, legumes, oak and willow.
